Fund-raising, has been the forte of MRT1. From hosting the India vs. Pakistan cricket match in the late 80s, celebrity concerts, comedy shows, plays and a sponsor a child” program, the Table has always taken fund-raising very seriously. What makes MRT1’s stand out is that all funds raised are channeled directly to projects. Overheads are borne by the members and event sponsors, ensuring that every rupee donated towards a cause finds its way to the people that need it the most.
About Ray of Light Foundation:
The Ray of Light Foundation was established in 2002 to help underprivileged children with cancer get the best treatment for free. At that time, the survival rate of children with cancer was as low as 40%. This is because most families could not afford treatment that amounted to Rs 5-6 lakhs for just drugs and chemotherapy alone.
The Ray of Light Foundation was therefore created with the following goals:
- Improve the survival rate of children with cancer
- Adopt children into the program whose families cannot afford or access treatment
- Provide the best treatment possible as per international protocols, regardless of the price
Children are treated for the entire duration of their illness and so funds need to cover 2-3 years of intensive treatment for each child. Children suffering from many different types of cancer are adopted into the program; the main selection criterion being whether or not they can afford and access treatment and not what type of cancer they have. Till date, the Ray of Light Foundation has helped 58 children with cancer. These kids have been ‘adopted’ by the foundation from the time they were diagnosed with cancer and treated free of cost for the entire duration of the illness. They are taken care of at the KanchiKamakoti Childs Trust Hospital in Chennai, a hospital that is at the forefront of Pediatrics medicine. Children come from all across TamilNadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala for treatment and specialized pediatrics oncologists are responsible for their care. A preliminary survey carried out demonstrated that most of the existing on-profit organization working for kids with cancer, were able to only partially cover the medical costs. However, the Ray of Light Foundations the first organization to fund the entire treatment of the child, taking the financial burden off the parents completely.Ray of Light is proud to report that 85% of its children are now cancer free. This is comparable to survival rates in the West. All its children have been sponsored by individuals and corporate. These children are now a living testimony to their kindness and generosity. In order to build the foundation a much needed corpus, in 2008,Founder and Trustee, Dr. Priya Ramachandran (Paediatric Surgeonat Child’s Trust Hospital, Chennai) started collecting art works from established artists and art collectors all over India. Joining hands with the Madras Round Table 1 and Lebara Foundation, Ray of Light urges you to buy an artwork and support its mission to help children fight and survive cancer.
